Kendrick Lamar’s ‘DAMN.’ is Officially 2x Platinum

Despite how “HUMBLE” he may be when it comes to achievements such as this one (“Y’all too infatuated with the f*cking numbers…”), you can’t really expect to not see your social media feeds flooded with post after post about how Kendrick Lamar’s third major label album, ‘DAMN.,’ has officially been certified double platinum by the RIAA. Heck, even Lamar himself, who usually isn’t too active on social media but has been partaking a bit more lately while currently on tour, took to Instagram to express a few words of gratification.

“These murals forever belong to my fans. You’ve always taken my words above and beyond. Around the world and back again. With trust. I am forever grateful. 3x”

DAMN.‘ is currently the only album to have achieved double platinum status in 2017. Well deserved, Kenny. Well deserved.

Ryan Leslie Set to Launch Artist-to-Fan Platform

13_RL_394Multifaceted musician Ryan Leslie is currently in the process of developing his very own direct artist-to-fan platform, Disruptive Multimedia. The platform, slated for a launch on July 4, will allow for artists to directly sell both music and merchandise to fans. In addition to that, artists will also be able to utilize the platform to create membership clubs and communicate with their fans. Disruptive Multimedia (DMM)  has received praise and been backed by Andreesen Horowitzco-founder Ben Horowitz, who had this to say:

Ryan is a genius and is about to transform the music industry and re-balance it in favor of the artists.

In an early 2013 interview with D: Dive Into Media, Beats Electronics CEO and co-founder Jimmy Iovine revealed that Beats by Dre would be working on a similar platform that would help artists preserve their data.

Right now, they [music services] have all the information and the artists have no information. No one knows.. I don’t know. I own a record company. I would die to know who bought my records on iTunes or bought my tickets on TicketMaster.”

O-X-Y for these Morons, She Breathes Music, SheBreathesMusic

ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron is now available in stores and online!, She Breathes Music, SheBreathesMusicThe wait is officially over! Top Dawg Entertainment’s ScHoolboy Q released his third studio album (first under Interscope) Oxymoron and I couldn’t be more excited and proud of Q and all of the TDE family.

Q has come a long way since Setbacks and Habits and Contradictions, but throughout his journey he has stayed true to himself and his craft, and if you’ve been following his career, then you know how truthful that statement is.You can’t help but to respect that, because a lot of artists let the fame get to their head and start conforming into an artist that their fans don’t even recognize. So, big-ups to Q and TDE for staying true.

If you haven’t already done so, head on over to your local Best Buy or Target to cop Oxymoron, or if you’re not into physical copies purchase it on iTunes HERE.

Beyoncé Unexpectedly Releases New Album on iTunes

Last night marked the 100th show of Beyoncé’s The Mrs. Carter Show, so it was only right for her to want to celebrate. However, no one knew that in doing so the Queen B would retreat to the net to surprise fans with the release of her brand new self-titled album.
The album comes fully equipped with a whopping 18 videos, 14 original songs and it includes features from hubby Jay Z, two features from their toddler Blu Ivy, as well as prominent music artists such as Drake and Frank Ocean. What a way to get the people talking, huh? Right, as if they’ve ever stopped.

Be sure to purchase your copy of Beyoncé here and while you’re at it, check here to see if The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour stops in a city near you any time soon!

Fruitvale Station: In Theaters Nationwide Friday, July 26

Although this is in no relation to music whatsoever, I felt the need to make a post about it because it is a subject that hits very close to home for me.
I’m sure many of you have seen previews for this film and have read articles and feedback about it on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, etc.
For those of you who are oblivious as to what Fruitvale Station is about, let me get you up to date.
Based on a factual event, Fruitvale Station tells the story of 22-year-old Bay Area native Oscar Grant and his tragic shooting death.
On January 1, 2009 at the Fruitvale Station in Oakland, California, an unarmed Grant was fatally shot by Bay Area Regional Transit (BART) officer Johannes Mehserle, who presumably mistook his taser for a gun.
In an effort to focus more on Grant’s humanity, director Ryan Coogler, who is also a Bay Area native, chose not to only touch on the shooting death but Grant’s life altogether – the good, the bad and the ugly.

I feel like it kind of got muddled over that Oscar is a human being. I feel like what was getting glossed over was the fact that this 22-year-old guy didn’t make it home to the people that he mattered to most. And for unnecessary reasons his life was cut short unnecessarily.” said Coogler in an interview with The Nation.

I absolutely love the fact that Coogler chose to concentrate on capturing Grant’s life in a way that we will all be able to witness for ourselves to see just how similar his life was in comparison to most of ours.
Flaws and all.
This movie was first brought to my attention a couple of months ago by my professor while I was sitting in my race and gender in the media class and it didn’t take long for my attention to be grasped. I knew right then and there that I would be going to support this film. I really commend Coogler for bringing Grant’s story to life because this kind of situation happens every day in our society and often times is overlooked.
Though I’ve yet to see the movie, I can say that I am thoroughly impressed from just the clips I have watched online. They all are sure to make you shed tears, if not, have you on the verge of them.
Fruitvale Station opened in select theaters on July 12, but this Friday, July 26 it will finally be playing nationwide. So please be sure to go and see this movie when you get a little free time.
Rest in Peace Oscar Grant.
